چکیده

Diagrammatic reasoning is a type of reasoning in which the pr imary means of inference is direct manipulat ion and inspection of a diagram. Diagrammatic reasoning is prevalent in human problem solving behavior, especially for problems involving spatial relations among physical objects. Our research examines the relationship between diagrammatic and symbolic reasoning in a computational framework. We have bui l t a system, called REDRAW, that emulates the human capability for reasoning w i th pictures in civil engineering. The class of structural analysis problems chosen provides a realistic domain whose solution process requires domain-specific knowledge as well as pictorial reasoning skills. We hypothesize that diagrammatic representations provide an environment where inferences about the physical results of proposed structural configurations can take place in a more intui t ive manner than that possible through purely symbolic representations.

Diagrammatic Reasoning by Propagating Constraints Through Geometric Objects: An Application to Truss Analysis

A diagrammatic reasoning for structural analysis on trusses is proposed and demonstrated on many examples . In the reasoning, deflected shape of a substructure is drawn at first then it is reasoned how the remaining substructure is affected by the deflection . By identifying the elongated parts are in tension and shortened parts are in compression, a qualitative stress analysis can be done diag...

Qualitative Spatial Reasoning: Framework and Frontiers

Spatial reasoning is a diverse topic: what might different spatial tasks have in common? One task where substantial progress has been made is qualitative spatial reasoning about motion. Unlike qualitative dynamics, purely qualitative spatial representations have not proven fruitful. Instead, a diagrammatic representation appears to be necessary. This paper begins by outlining the Metric Diagram...

Operationalizing Diagrammaticity

In this contribution we present a model for a component of a diagrammatic reasoning system. For reasons of identifying elementary components for diagrammatic reasoning processes we introduce the notions of the elementary diagrammatic inference step (EDIS) and the elementary diagrammatic simulation step (EDSS) as the basic processes for diagrammatic reasoning. The EDIS comprises several descript...
